The MLB Scouting Bureau held its annual Pennsylvania showcase on Sunday, August 3 in Phillipsburg, PA. Twenty Five prospects performed for about 20 pro scouts on a wet morning in central PA. Pitchers threw a short 12-15 pitch bullpen and position players went through a brief basic professional style workout. Here are some highlights from players that stood out.
Dylan Cyphert 2015 LHP 6′ 180lbs Clarion- Limestone HS EvoShield Canes
Cyphert recently switched commitments from Penn State to Pitt beofre performing for the Cubs at the East Cost Pro. Dylan worked 87-88 and hit 89 with his typical easy delivery.
Culver Hughes 2015 RHP 6’3″ 195lbs West Chester East HS Chandler Baseball
The long and lean Virginia Tech recruit sat 87-89 and touched 90 with good life to his fastball and solid secondary offerings.
Peyton Reesman 2016 LHP 6’5 215lbs Miflin County HS Flood City Elite
Reesman may be the best uncommitted 2016 in the state of PA. The left hander has a long frame with broad shoulders. His mechanics are a bit rough around the edges but it appears he has the athletic ability and coordination to make any changes needed. Peyton worked 86-87 and hit 88mph. His off-speed pitches were enough to keep hitters honest for now and good building blocks for the future.
Ryan Sloniger 2015 Catcher 5’11” 185lbs Punxsutawney HS Chandler Baseball
While Sloniger is smaller in stature than fellow Punxy native, Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco, the small north central PA town has another native that can really hit on a high level and Sloniger does it from the left side. Solid catch and throw guy with a 1.96 pop. 7.2/60
Joe Sibeto 2016 Catcher 6’0″ 185lbs Chartiers Valley HS Allegheny Pirates
The uncommitted Sibeto displayed a very strong arm behind the plate with a consistent pop around 2.0. Had a very good round of BP in the rain showing impressive bat speed.
Isaiah Kearns 2016 Inf/RHP 6’0″ 185lbs Mifflin County HS Flood City Elite
Kearns is uncommitted and very raw on the mound and the field. He is very live bodied and loose in his actions. Isaiah ran it up to 89 on the mound and displayed great hand speed at the plate. His swing got long at times but showed the ability to use his hands to stay inside the ball at times as well. Very interesting prospect.
Ryan Karstetter 2015 Inf 6’3″ 200lbs IMG Academy Evoshield Canes
The State College, PA native is committed to the University of Virginia and has tremendously polished skills on the diamond. Very easy actions at the plate and on the infield jumps out at observers and scouts. Uncommonly fast for his size, he ran a sub 6.5/60 at the East Coast pro and a 6.79 on a wet track at Philipsburg.
Kyle Datres 2015 SS 6’0″ 175lbs Loyalsock HS Chandler Baseball
Datres is one of the better all around athletes in the state of PA. An all-state selection in football, basketball and baseball, as well as a two time state champion in baseball at Loyalsock. The North Carolina commit is a great competitor with a solid all around ability in each facet of the game. 6.79/60 and a very strong arm that can touch 90 from the mound although he did not pitch at the event on Sunday.
Nick Dunn 2105 MIF 5’10” 175 Shikelemy HS Baseball U
Dunn was one of the top uncommitted 2015 prospects in PA until his recent commitment to Maryland. Dunn has a very smooth stroke from the left side that should be his calling card going forward. While his size or workout numbers wont jump off the page, he has smooth and easy actions to all parts of his game. 6.89/60
Frankie Jezorio 2015 OF 5’10 180lbs Peters Township HS Allegheny Pirates
Jezorio shows great bat speed from both sides of the plate. Jezorio is one of the best uncommitted prospects in PA with his tremendous athleticism and improved throwing ability. 6.69/60
Caleb Walls 2015 OF 5’10” 175lbs State College HS Keystone Railsplitters
The George Mason commit, Walls, turned in a very impressive overall performance on Sunday. He he drove the ball with authority consistently throughout BP. He shows enough arm to use his speed in CF on higher levels. 6.6/60
